Time dragged on. Raith and Phil eventually went to bed, but they weren’t asleep. They were lying on top of the duvet. It was still too warm to be under it.
“He didn’t want to come in with us, Philly.”
“No, love. I think he just needed to be on his own for a bit.”
“But when I want to be on my own, it’s actually better when I’m not, if you know what I mean.”
“I know what you mean, yes.”
“Too much happens in my head. It’s scary.”
Phil kissed him on the cheek. “I know.”
“What did you do when I was missing?”
“I fell asleep between the two of them.”
“All cuddled together?”
“All cuddled together.”
“But Mike doesn’t want to be cuddled?”
“Not for the moment, no. He probably just wants to be alone with his thoughts.”
“Thinking of a plan?”
“Well, maybe. Just his thoughts. For a bit.”
There was silence for a minute.
“I hope they’re being kind to Ross.”
“I do too, love.”
“I don’t think I can sleep, Phil.” Big brown eyes on the point of tears.
“Of course you can. Turn over and we’ll play the alphabet game. Come on.”
Obediently, Raith turned onto his side.
Phil put an arm over him and said, “Right. Think of a fruit beginning with ‘A’.”
“Can we have fruit or veg?”
“If you like.”
“Asparagus.”
“That was quick!”
“It’s on a recipe. I remembered cos the letter ‘A’ was really fancy.”
By the time they reached ‘J’, Raith was sleeping. Phil carefully swung his legs off the bed, tip-toed across the carpet and made his way to Mike’s room. He could see a shaft of light so he opened the door. Mike was seated on the edge of the bed, his T-shirt and briefs still on. His jeans lay crumpled on the floor. Phil raised him up and finished undressing him. He pressed the two of them together. He felt Mike respond to his touch and he pushed him gently onto the bed.
Mike moaned as Phil’s chest began to grind against his own. He hooked his fingers over Phil’s shoulders and arched his body, groin against groin, crotch against crotch. Phil moved Mike’s hands and placed Mike’s legs onto his shoulders instead. Then he folded Mike’s legs up so that Mike could hold his knees apart. So vulnerable: Mike’s ass was tilted, visible, inviting… His eyes were tightly closed. Phil brushed aside the fleeting image of a trussed chicken waiting to be stuffed. He spread Mike’s cheeks and buried his face between Mike’s thighs, licking and pushing with his tongue. He let Mike change position. Feet now planted on the bed, Mike pushed back onto every lick, desire and urgency in now wide-open eyes. Phil broke off.
“Don’t stop!”
“I’m not.” He placed a pillow, Ross’s pillow, underneath Mike’s hips and greased an index finger. He pushed. Just like work, and nothing like work whatsoever. With each push, Mike closed his eyes then opened them wide with an intake of breath. A second finger, moving more freely this time. Phil hooked Mike’s legs over his shoulders for a second time and guided eight hard inches in.
